Blessings to you, my name is William Slayton. I served my country as a United States Marine, trained at Paris Island and was stationed at Camp Lejune with some of the best men and women in this country. I enjoy serving others and giving back. This is my Calling. Today I wear a badge, serve my community and the City of Indianapolis as a police officer for over 24 years. I’ve dedicated my life to protecting and serving both in the US Military and to the City of Indianapolis.
But the hardest fight of my life isn’t on a battlefield or a street corner – it’s inside my own body. I’m fighting a battle most people never see. Most importantly I’m facing a fight I can’t win alone. I’ve been on dialysis for five years, waiting for a kidney transplant – a wait that tests my strength and my endurance more than any deployment or patrol. My Marine Corps training taught me to adapt and overcome, I continue pushing forward with the bigger picture firmly in sight, no matter how difficult the day.
While dialysis keeps me alive, I still show up for my community because purpose fuels me more than any machine ever could. I’m learning that courage isn’t just charging into danger; sometimes it’s waking up, hooking up to dialysis machine for hours, and praying for the call that gives me back my life. Every morning I put on my uniform and with every shift I work, and every person I help gives me a purpose to fight, to serve and humbles me in ways I never expected. This journey teaches me sometimes the bravest thing I can do is ask for help.
So, if you’re reading my story, it’s God’s divine providence for us to connect. I trust in God’s plan when I can’t trace his hands. I’m asking from the deepest place in my heart for you to become organ donor with DOVE. One selfless decision could give me the chance to keep doing the work I love, showing up for the community I enjoy serving and continuing to support my family who depend on me. Your choice would give me, and so many others like me, the chance to keep living, turning our struggle into survival and our darkest moment into the miracle we pray for.
