William Lowry joined the US Air Force in 1971 and served four years. He was originally told he would be sent to Vietnam but never received orders. He was trained as a sheet metal specialist and worked in the fabrication and care of planes. Bill specialized in F-4 Phantom fighter jets, spent time at Bergstrom Air Force Base, TX, and traveled to Aviano AFB in Italy to perform needed repair work on their aircraft.
Bill was honorably discharged in 1975. In 1980, he served one year in the Bexar County Sheriff’s Department, then moved to the San Antonio Police Department and was there for 29 years. He also was a Master Mason for 12 years.
Bill used his musical talents playing trumpet to perform “Taps” at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, burials for firefighters, police officers, and military personnel. He also played in the ceremonial police band and was the President of the Blue Knight International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, which raises money to help the disabled.
In 2018, Bill battled colon cancer, and in 2020, diabetes and high blood pressure – all leading to his kidney failure and the need to begin peritoneal dialysis in 2021. He is struggling with fatigue and loss of appetite, and at times needs the use of a walker. He and his wife Anita have been married for eight years and share two sons, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren!
