John Riley served a two-year enlistment in the Army during the Vietnam era from 1968-1970. In his high school business classes, he was so proficient in typing that after graduation in 1966, John was recruited to work at the FAA for two years as a secretary before he started his active-duty career. While he was at AIT Training in Fort Dix, the Principal of the school brought him on staff as a personnel specialist and he served the remainder of his military time there.
After his honorable discharge, John went back to work for the FAA for a few years before he moved on to work for three different law firms as a legal secretary. He had been with his last employer for 30 years before his retirement in 2014. John has been married to his wife Maria for 21 years and they have 3 children, 2 grandsons and 2 great-grandchildren. He really enjoys watching TV court shows, which is not a surprise, and so loved volunteering and working with the kids in his local high school marching band that when he receives a new kidney he would like to return.
John’s kidney disease stems from a battle with diabetes and he struggles with low hemoglobin which can cause severe anemia and can require the need for blood transfusions. He is grateful that he is not yet reliant on dialysis, but he does still face some fatigue and deals with peripheral neuropathy. John has a desire to get back to living a full and active life, working with young people gives him joy, and with your help, he can. Will you consider sharing his story of service to his country and to his community and his need for a living kidney donor?
John has enlisted the help of a Veteran's organization called DOVE Transplant which is helping in his outreach to find his life-saving kidney donor. DOVE will assist all prospective donors throughout the process and make sure they do not incur any out-of-pocket expenses related to the evaluation or surgery.
