My name is Steve Welsch. I served in the Army for 25 years, and I have had numerous deployments. My last deployment, I had the honor to serve with 10 other men on an MITT team where we trained and mentored an Iraqi Army Battalion while giving tactical guidance and logistical support to build independent military capabilities.

When I retired medically in 2013. I began volunteering at my local DAV chapter 187 in El Paso, TX, where I am currently serving as a service officer, Benefits Protection Team, as well as the chapter Judge Advocate. As a Service Officer, I enjoy providing assistance to military veterans and their families with their VA claims, appeals, and upgrades. Previously, I served as the chapter Commander, Senior Vice, and Treasurer.

I am married with 6 children and 7 grandchildren.

My kidney journey began around 2013. My right kidney was removed in 2018 as it was deemed a dead kidney.  In 2024, my GFR went below 19 which enabled me to be accepted to the Kidney Transplant list. Currently I am not on dialysis. My blood type is O+.

I am one of the founders of a Men’s weekly Bible study which is still going strong after 6 years. Post transplant I would really like to increase my energy and have less fatigue so that I can get back to riding my bike and enjoy quality time with my friends and family.

We need you to help us support Steve.  Whether through spreading the word on social media or considering becoming a donor,  you can make a profound impact!

Living kidney donation has been proven to be safe.  There are no long term consequences to the donor.  After recovery, donors can live a normal life with one kidney.

DOVE will assist all prospective donors throughout the process and make sure they do not incur any out-of-pocket expenses related to the  evaluation or surgery.
