My name is Scott Crandall, and I was raised in New York’s Adirondack Mountains. Upon graduating from high school, I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up, so I joined the Air Force in 1988. I became an Applied Sciences Technician (99106) working in a chemistry lab for the Air Force Technical Applications Center at McClellan AFB, CA. After my four years were up, I left active duty and ended up in the Navy Reserve as a part of Amphibious Construction Battalion Two, Detachment 102, where I became a Barge Ferry Coxswain for a short time.
Later in 1994 I joined the Vermont Air National Guard and proudly became one of the Green Mountain Boys. There I was an Electrical Power Production Craftsman where I finished my military career. With the GMB I was deployed to Mali, Africa to build a medical clinic, Wake Island to upgrade their emergency generators, and many more wonderful places too numerous to mention. In 2006 we did our rotation in Iraq and though not a “top ten” deployment, I still learned a lot about the region and cultures. I made it a point no matter where I was deployed to learn something about the people and at least some of their language. I am currently in the Retired Reserve so mostly retired from the military in 2014.
When I left active duty, I worked a few different jobs. I then decided to follow a boyhood dream and went to work for CSX Railroad as a Freight Conductor. Then an opportunity came up to work my weekend job with the GMB full time so in 2005 I took it. When my kidney disease ended my military career so did my federal position go bye bye. I did a few years as a Correction Officer (thought it would be an easy job-NOT) so now I work as a highly skilled electrician for a municipal power plant. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and skills with anyone who is willing to learn.
I met my wife Robbie on eHarmony in 2005 and we were married in 2006. I absolutely love scuba diving with my wife and our extended scuba family. I am active with a model railroad club and have used my electronic tinkering to make some improvements to the club layout. We are trying to work with the local schools and children’s programs to introduce the hobby to another generation.
My first nephrologist said I have had IgA nephropathy all my life, but I was officially diagnosed in 2012. I am not on dialysis yet and have high hopes to find a kidney before I need dialysis if I am being honest. I have had to cut my work schedule down to 32 hours due to fatigue and that is starting to become too much as my kidney function declines. I miss diving with my wife. The amazing gift of a kidney transplant would allow me to get back to the active lifestyle I once lived.
For medically cleared donors, giving the gift of life through living kidney donation has been proven to be very safe. DOVE will assist all prospective donors throughout the process and make sure they do not incur any out-of-pocket expenses related to the evaluation or surgery. A healthy person can live a normal life with one kidney and save Scott’s life with the other!
Your support, whether through spreading the word on social media or considering becoming a donor, can make a profound impact on his life and the life of his family!
