My name is Michael, and I proudly served in the Army as a surveyor for Field Artillery. I achieved the rank of Sergeant (E-5), where I served as a section chief and learned the value of strong leadership, discipline, and teamwork. Although I never deployed, I served during the Cold War, when there were no active conflicts requiring field artillery units. Even without a deployment, I took great pride in my service. What I appreciated most was the Army’s structure, the sense of purpose, and the camaraderie I shared with my fellow soldiers.
During my military career, I was honored to receive several Letters of Commendation, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, and two Army Achievement Medals. After leaving active duty, I continued serving for a few more years in the Rhode Island National Guard.
Following my military service, I attended trade school and began a career as an automotive mechanic. For the past 37 years, I’ve worked in the automotive industry, including the last 33 years at the same repair shop. I was fortunate to find a workplace that felt like home, and I chose to build my career there. Today, I still work in a reduced capacity, spending more time teaching and mentoring younger mechanics than performing the physically demanding work myself. It’s rewarding to pass along what I’ve learned and help ensure the next generation upholds the reputation and quality that we’ve worked so hard to build.
Shortly after leaving active duty, I met the love of my life. We were married a year and a half later, and we’ve now been happily married for 36 years. Together we’ve raised two wonderful children, a son and a daughter, who have both built successful lives of their own. Our daughter has blessed us with two incredible grandsons, who bring so much joy to our lives.
Like every family, we’ve faced our share of challenges. My wife has battled cancer twice, along with the many complications that came with those diagnoses, and both of our children had difficult births. Through every obstacle, we’ve leaned on one another, remained strong, and grown even closer. Today, she’s still my best friend.
Kidney disease has affected my family for generations. I have polycystic kidney disease (PKD), an inherited condition that has impacted my grandmother, her three children, my father’s three children, my daughter, and now both of her sons.
I was officially diagnosed with PKD in 2019. While I haven’t started dialysis yet, my kidney function has declined to the point where dialysis could become necessary at any time. The symptoms have become increasingly difficult to manage. The constant exhaustion, nausea, feeling of fullness, and persistent heartburn make everyday activities much harder than they used to be.
When I’m feeling well, I enjoy fishing, woodworking, and playing music; I play both guitar and bass. More than anything, though, I love spending time with my grandsons. They remind me every day of what’s truly important.
A kidney transplant would give me the opportunity to regain the energy and quality of life that kidney disease has slowly taken away. I look forward to returning to the hobbies I love, spending more active time with my family, and making lasting memories with my grandchildren for many years to come.
