I enlisted in the US Navy in September 1987 and served until 1990. I was seventeen years old and fresh out of high school in Detroit, MI when I entered boot camp. My military career eventually led me to San Diego where I continued my journey. I achieved 3rd Class Petty Officer in the Navy and my rank was DC3, which is equivalent to a firefighter in the civilian world.

After leaving the military I decided to stay in San Diego where I eventually met someone. I have had various jobs since I left but what has really helped me was being able to give back by being a sales rep. I have over 20 years working in sales in different capacities and have grown a lot over the years. I even bought a house, started a family, and have been blessed with three wonderful kids. They keep a smile on my face. I would very much like to be here for every part of their lives.

I was hit hard by the diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) which eventually led to me losing the function of my kidneys and I started dialysis in It’s devastating. It’s mind boggling. It’s “what did I do wrong in life”, but my hope is maybe one day I can return to a normal life. So, I’ll keep marching on and I’ll say, “Go Cowboys and Go Yankees!”

For medically cleared donors, giving the gift of life through living kidney donation has been proven to be very safe. DOVE will assist all prospective donors throughout the process and make sure they do not incur any out-of-pocket expenses related to the evaluation or surgery. A healthy person can live a normal life with one kidney and save Martell’s life with the other!
