My name is Kirkland L. Dent, Sr. I joined the U.S Navy on October 08,1985. I completed my boot camp training in Orlando Florida. I was stationed in New London CT Naval Submarine Base where I did active duty for 4 years. I returned home to Macon, Georgia after serving. I later joined the navy reserves after my active-duty enlistment. While in the reserves I was employed by the United States Postal Service from 1990 to 2020. During my time at the Postal Service, my naval reserve unit was recalled back to active duty, where I was deployed to the Middle East for Operation NOBLE EAGLE AND ENDURING FREEDOM from November 27, 2001, to August 26, 2002. I eventually retired from the Naval Reserves on  March 31, 2006.  I returned back to work at United States Postal Service where I met my wife. We have been married 12 years 5 months . We have four children (two boys and two girls), one granddaughter, and two dogs.

I started seeing a nephrologist in 2015. The doctor informed me that my kidneys were functioning at only 20%. I maintained functioning at 15% until July of 2018. A few days after my 5th wedding anniversary my life truly changed forever. My kidney function really began to decline. I had the conversation with my nephrologist about dialysis (hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis). We decided that when the time came for dialysis, I would be placed on peritoneal dialysis.

In 2023, the time came I was diagnosed with End Stage Kidney Disease on October 31, 2023. The process for peritoneal dialysis began! Fast forward… it’s now February 2026 and peritoneal dialysis is still going well. I never missed a treatment, not one day. Every day is not a good day, but I still give thanks to God for allowing me to see and experience both the good and bad days.
I am approaching my 13th wedding anniversary in July of 2026.  I am really in need of a kidney. If you are interested in helping me by becoming a living donor, please go to dovetransplant.org.

We need you to help us support Kirkland.  Whether through spreading the word on social media or considering becoming a donor,  you can make a profound impact!

Living kidney donation has been proven to be safe.  There are no long term consequences to the donor.  After recovery, donors can live a normal life with one kidney.

DOVE will assist all prospective donors throughout the process and make sure they do not incur any out-of-pocket expenses related to the  evaluation or surgery.
