My name is James Osterman. I was raised in Houghton Lake, MI. After I graduated in 1966, I worked for the Saginaw Fire Department until il I joined the US Army in 1967. Serving in Vietnam as a Recon forward observer and Radio Operator, I became a Sergeant E-5. When my tour of duty in Vietnam ended, I was sent to Germany to finish out my time in the military.
Returning to the states in 1971, I became a Police officer for the City of Saginaw, MI. While in Law Enforcement, I became an Instructor for the Michigan Law Enforcement Council, where I taught First Aid and Gang Investigations. During my time as a police officer, I also worked as a K-9 dog handler and a homicide investigator. I also work in various positions with police departments in Michigan, including Plymouth, MI; Lake County; Saginaw; and Mason County. I initiated the Saginaw County Gang Task Force and became a Deputy FBI Agent and Deputy US Marshall. I was recognized as an Expert in the Federal system and all courts in Saginaw County. As an Expert in Gang activity, I have instructed officers from every county in the state of Michigan. I worked with the Gang Task Force until my retirement in 1997.
Upon retiring, I was hired by the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe in 1997 and was given the rank of Sargent. I initiated and was appointed to lead the Soaring Eagle Casino Police Unit. As head of this Unit, I performed high-level security for Wayne Newton, Roy Clark, and many, many others.
I have been married to my wife Dora since 1982. Because of my wife’s profession, I have been able to receive my hemodialysis at home, 4 days a week. My kidney disease was diagnosed in 2018, and I have been on hemodialysis since February 2025.
These treatments have seriously curtailed my activity level. Prior to being placed on hemodialysis, I enjoyed traveling and visiting my family. Now my family has to come to me. I have 2 children, Gretchen and James III, 5 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. I liked traveling around the country to see all the wonderful sights it has to offer. Now I can no longer take trips that last over 3 days.
We need you to help us support James. Whether through spreading the word on social media or considering becoming a donor, you can make a profound impact!
Living kidney donation has been proven to be safe. There are no long term consequences to the donor. After recovery, donors can live a normal life with one kidney.
DOVE will assist all prospective donors throughout the process and make sure they do not incur any out-of-pocket expenses related to the evaluation or surgery.
