My name is Gary Myrick. I am a devoted father, a proud veteran and a retired, highly decorated police officer. This is my story. I am a lifelong resident of Suffolk, Virginia. In my junior year in high school, I enlisted in the Virginia Army National Guard as a light infantry soldier. After completing basic training, I returned home and entered the workforce. During this time, I served my community as a volunteer firefighter and medic for five years. I served honorably for 8 years in the guard. While serving, I was formally introduced to law enforcement by way of my platoon sergeant, who was a local police officer.
Inspired by his example, I tested and was hired by my hometown police department in 1997. I completed my enlistment in the guard in 1998. Shortly after finishing my enlistment, I started having extremely high blood pressure. After several years of tests, I was diagnosed with Conn’s syndrome. By this time, this was discovered, and my kidneys were severely damaged. My kidney function stabilized for more than 15 years or so, but recently it has begun to decline.
In 2024, I retired from law enforcement, ending a successful career, and started enjoying the fruits of my labor. I committed to taking care of my family, traveled the East Coast for saltwater fishing, and enjoyed road trips.
I am now treating my condition with in-home dialysis, which places time constraints on my life. I have managed this challenge to the best of my ability, but I am at a rare crossroads in my life. Therefore, I need help finding a kidney donor.
We need you to help us support Gary. Whether through spreading the word on social media or considering becoming a donor, you can make a profound impact!
Living kidney donation has been proven to be safe. There are no long term consequences to the donor. After recovery, donors can live a normal life with one kidney.
DOVE will assist all prospective donors throughout the process and make sure they do not incur any out-of-pocket expenses related to the evaluation or surgery.
