I was born and raised in Ontario, Ohio, a village adjoining Mansfield, Ohio. Although my name is Frederic Troy Lyons, I prefer going by “Troy”. I enlisted in the United States Army in 1981. I served as an aircraft mechanic/crew chief in Korea, at the United States Military Academy and as an airplane maintenance instructor at Ft. Eustis, VA. I was honorably discharged in 1988.
Upon discharge from the Army, I immediately went to work for the York County-City of Poquoson, VA Sheriff’s Office. I retired in 2021 following a 32+ year career ultimately obtaining the rank of Captain. During my time with the Sheriff’s office, I served 16 years as Federal Reservist with National Disaster Medical System Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team. I deployed as a medical death investigator to Mississippi and Louisiana following hurricane Katrina and as a fingerprint specialist to Haiti following the earthquake.
In my retirement, I enjoy family activities, cooking, shooting sports, traveling to visit family and friends, riding my motorcycle to rallies in Daytona Beach, FL, Myrtle Beach, SC, Ocean City, MD and for 10 years Rolling Thunder in Washington, DC. As well as trips to Western, NC/Eastern Tennessee to the Tail of The Dragon.

I was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in September 2023 and was advised in January 2024 that I needed a Kidney Transplant and would need kidney dialysis in the interim. I was listed as an active kidney recipient in June 2024 and began in home peritoneal dialysis (PD) in January 2025. Because of the symptoms and effects of chronic kidney disease and now being on kidney dialysis 7 days a week for several hours in the daytime, I am currently unable to ride my motorcycle.
Traveling to visit family and friends requires extensive prior planning limiting my ability to travel. My days mostly consist of 3 dialysis exchanges per day and visits to doctor appointments. Of my 6 siblings only one is still alive and unable to donate a kidney due to her own medical issues. Since CKD runs in my family, including my children, they are not eligible to donate. So far, I have had one possible living donor come forward that turned out not to be a match.
I have been married to my wonderful and supportive wife Cristy, who is a saint, for 38 years. We have been blessed with two adult children; a son Aaron (Wife Morgan) and Daughter Taylor and the love of our lives, our grandson Revan! Since starting dialysis, I am feeling much better and have more energy allowing me to spend quality time with our grandson; I have even started cooking again. I am really looking forward to receiving the gift of a kidney transplant, it will allow me to resume my traveling with family and to once again, the joys of riding my motorcycle.
For medically cleared donors, giving the gift of life through living kidney donation has been proven to be very safe. DOVE will assist all prospective donors throughout the process and make sure they do not incur any out-of-pocket expenses related to the evaluation or surgery. A healthy person can live a normal life with one kidney and save Troy’s life with the other!
Your support, whether through spreading the word on social media or considering becoming a donor, can make a profound impact on his life and the life of his family!
