I am Master Sergeant Clayton Perreira, a dedicated Soldier who has served my country with honor and commitment for nearly four decades. At 55 years old, I have spent the majority of my life in uniform and currently mark 38 years of service in the Hawaii Army National Guard. My military career reflects a deep sense of duty, leadership, and sacrifice in defense of the United States.
Throughout my career, I deployed in support of overseas operations in Iraq and Kuwait during the height of the Iraq War. My final deployment was to Kuwait, where I served as a UH-60M Black Hawk Crew Chief and the Maintenance Lead responsible for 30 Black Hawk helicopters operating in a combat zone during the surge period of the conflict. In this demanding role, I ensured aircraft readiness, safety, and mission capability for aviation crews conducting critical operations across the theater. My leadership and technical experience helped maintain the operational tempo required during wartime.
Like many service members who deployed during this era, I was exposed to environmental hazards while serving overseas. My kidney disease has been determined to be service-connected and is linked to exposure to burn pits in Balad, Iraq, as well as oil field contaminants in Kuwait and the Basra region. Despite the health challenges I now face as a kidney transplant candidate, I continue to serve with the same resilience and commitment that has defined my military career.
Beyond my service to the nation, I am a devoted family man. I am the father of two children and share a strong military bond with my wife, who has also served more than 30 years in the National Guard. Together, we have built a life centered on service, sacrifice, and family.
Outside of the military, I enjoy restoring and driving vintage air-cooled Volkswagens. I am an active enthusiast and proud member of the Big Island VW Car Club on Hawaii Island, where I share my passion for classic vehicles with fellow collectors and hobbyists. When I’m not working on Volkswagens, I enjoy fishing and spending time with my family.
After dedicating two-thirds of my life to military service, I look forward to eventually retiring and enjoying a quieter chapter of life. My hopes for the future are simple but meaningful: spending more time with my family, enjoying days fishing and working on classic Volkswagens, and living long enough to meet and enjoy my future grandchildren.
My life has been defined by service, perseverance, and loyalty—to my country, my family, and my community. Even as I face serious health challenges, I remain hopeful for the years ahead.
