I enlisted in the United States Navy on May 29, 1980, and served for three years. I was an airman and worked as an aircraft handler aviation boatsman mate. I really enjoyed traveling around the world seeing all the different places and cultures.
After my time in the military, I went to a two-year trade school and received my certificates in plumbing and heating. I was hired at a starch factory doing a variety of jobs along the way. My final positions were in maintenance and as a boilerman before the company closed after being there for 27 years.
My wife Letitia and I have been married for 40 years. We have been blessed with two children, both married; our son has four girls, and our daughter has one girl. All five granddaughters are growing up fast and are into sports and computers.
In 2009, I was diagnosed with IgA nephropathy, a disease of the kidneys and immune system. My medical team helped me work on taking better care of my health through diet and exercise. I am still doing the things I like to do just a little bit slower. My ambitions are still the same: helping in the daily lives of my granddaughters and building and refurbishing bird houses.
