I’m Americo Campos Nieves, and I served for six years in the United States Army Reserve as a Finance Officer. During this time, I was activated for five months during operation Desert Storm and stationed in Saudi Arabia as a First Lieutenant Cash Control Officer for the theater. That five-month activation was one of the most impactful and interesting periods of my life. I had the unique opportunity to assist many service members with their financial matters during what was undoubtedly a challenging time for them. The gratitude and relief I saw on their faces when I was able to help them resolve their problems brought me immense satisfaction, knowing I had made a difference in their lives, even if just for a moment.
After returning from the war, I resumed my civilian job, but with a newfound perspective and enhanced skills, particularly in managing projects more effectively. The experiences and lessons I gained during my time in the military have greatly contributed to my professional growth. Currently, I work as a Finance Manager, a role I continue to perform to the best of my ability and plan to maintain as long as my health permits.
On a personal note, I have been married to my wife, Myrna, for 40 wonderful years. We met at the university in 1984, got married in August 1986, and have built a beautiful life together ever since. We have two children, Alejandro and Ammy. Interestingly, my daughter’s name is a combination of the first two letters of my name and the first two letters of my wife’s name—a meaningful reflection of our bond.
After returning from the war, I was diagnosed with cancer in my left kidney, which was subsequently removed. Thankfully, I am now cancer-free. However, my remaining kidney has not been functioning well, and since 2017, I have been battling kidney disease, which has progressively worsened. I am doing everything I can to maintain my health and manage my diet to delay the need for dialysis, but I know it may eventually become unavoidable. Despite these challenges, I continue to focus on my work and cherish the time I spend with my family, which provides me with comfort and strength during difficult moments.
Looking ahead, I remain hopeful. Once I receive a kidney transplant, I look forward to taking a well-deserved vacation to spend quality time with my family. I aspire to fully embrace and appreciate the simple joys of life, free from the looming concerns of dialysis. Through it all, I remain optimistic and focused on the blessings I have, striving to make the most of every moment.
